SO, we have all been there. Its Fridays night, and the whole weekend is stretched out in front of you. and weirdly, with spare time being such a premium - what do you do to find yourself in the best place for the next week.
WITH time as a sparse luxury, the pressure can be on to share and divide your time time between everyone who wants a tiny piece. The danger is not being able to recognise that actually you also nee to be able to benefit. The craziness is, that with all of the demands it often creates a feeling of guilt when you claim you stake to your own free time. So how do my clients get round all of this and what strategies have they created to help.
PAMPER YOURSELF: Well lets face it, who wouldn't like time to just pamper yourself. The joys of a large glass of red wine and a great book, or an evening with friends just chatting can be perfect, especially if it is cold outside. A massive pot of tea, and great big blanket and your sofa - for me that sounds like the best way to lazily while away a few hours. For others it can mean a surprise trip to the hairdressers, a visit to a friend - what ever it takes to make you feel a bit special.
WALK THIS WAY: Even though the weather can still be totally unpredictable, take a moment to get outside. Exploring the world around you is a completely amazing way to feel like you are slowing down.
Unwind your mind, and breathing in the fresh air - is definitely not the cliche that people think. There is so much research to prove the benefits of getting outside and moving.
MAKE IT DATE NIGHT: There is no excuse, date night is always a great way to spend some real quality time. Put on the clothes which make you feel amazing, slick on your favourite lip gloss and simply book a table in your favourite restaurant. Take your other half or a friend, it really doesn't matter. But really truly enjoy the experience of picking off the menu, of savouring the perfect glass of rich red wine and follow it up with great conversation.
PRETEND TO BE A TOURIST: So, I have tried this one!! Finding new joy in a place you have never been is a great way to unwind and feel like you are able to explore. I love to see the world, but even within your own county or district I can guarantee there will be places you have never been. Make a plan, book a day and really just go and enjoy. It will mean you feel so much more open to new things and leave you feeling positive and motivated.
GET CRAFTY: This is my favourite thing to do, but weirdly I seem never to be able to find the time. Allowing yourself to be creative is an excellent way to unwind and just spend a few hours not thinking, worrying or becoming distracted by the TV or phone. With so many ways to fill your time this section could be never ending, the important thing here though is to do what works for you.
COOK UP SOMETHING AMAZING: Lastly, there is so much research to link happiness with food, so finding new meals, cooking with new ingredients and actually enjoying the sensations will provide your free time with quality. I have a friend, (Kramie - if your reading this, it's you!) ...who can spread so much love and enjoyment from her Oreo Cheesecake, or her Chicken Curry. Sharing food and the social aspects make this a hugely enjoyable process ad one which will leave you feeling empowered and driven.
WITH time at a premium, don't waste it worrying. Make a decision, plan and then just go have fun. The first steps in changing your mood and your motivation is to just make that change. All you need to do then is go along for the ride. If this doesn't work, change up something else until you find what does.
